THE TOOLBOX / FIELD NOTES

Why does my pixel art look blurry?

A practical guide to whole-number scaling, native resolution, and keeping sharp edges.

A tiny drawing can look sharp in an editor and soft the moment it is enlarged. Usually the cause is resampling: software inserts blended colors between the original pixels. Your drawing has not become more detailed; the boundaries have simply become less distinct.

Start with the original resolution

If a sprite was drawn at 32 × 32, keep that as your working grid. To make a larger version, multiply both dimensions by the same whole number. A 4× enlargement produces 128 × 128 pixels, with each original pixel becoming a 4 × 4 block.

16 × 164×64 × 64
32 × 324×128 × 128
64 × 328×512 × 256

Use nearest-neighbor sampling

Nearest neighbor copies a nearby source pixel rather than blending it. This preserves a limited palette and sharp pixel boundaries. It is especially useful for icons, tiles and game sprites. Our pixel art resizer uses this method for both its working-grid conversion and enlargement.

Avoid uneven enlargement

Enlarging a 32-pixel image to 100 pixels creates a scale of 3.125. Some original pixels need more display space than others, so repeated patterns can look uneven. Exporting at 96 or 128 pixels gives a clean 3× or 4× relationship. This tool offers 1×, 2×, 4× and 8× export presets.

Keep transparency and use PNG

PNG preserves sharp color boundaries and transparent backgrounds. JPEG is intended for photographs and may introduce visible artifacts around flat-colored edges. Converting an already damaged JPEG to PNG preserves the current image; it cannot restore the original clean pixels.

Check where the file will appear

A browser, game engine or presentation program may apply another resizing step. Inspect the final display at its actual size. For websites, pixelated image rendering can help, but it is still best to choose sensible display dimensions. For an LED matrix, work with the actual matrix resolution rather than the enlarged preview size.
